When it comes to helping you smile, at Fred Knaysi DDS, PC we take our job very seriously. We can help with everything from whitening your teeth to giving you brand new ones! In some circumstances teeth can become unable to support their own structure and we can help to restore them and save your tooth through the use of crowns.
Crowns give us a way to save teeth that might otherwise need to be removed, allowing you to avoid costly replacement options.
Reasons for Choosing a Dental Crown
Crowns are dental restorations that act as a cap for teeth that may have experienced damage or deterioration and are no longer structurally sound.
One common reason that people end up needing crowns is amalgam fillings that fail. Amalgam fillings are the large, silver fillings that are occasionally used to restore decay in molars. Because of the limitations of amalgam, they usually require quite a large portion of the tooth to be removed in order to be successful. Once they reach the end of their life and need to be replaced we sometimes find that there is not enough of your tooth left to successfully support another filling. Instead we can use a crown to restore the tooth, saving it and allowing you to keep the full functionality of your tooth.
Types of Dental Crowns
There are a number of different kinds of crowns that we can use to restore your damaged teeth. Different materials are used to craft each crown, here are some of the most common kinds of crowns:
There are a variety of different kinds of ceramic crowns, all of them are able to closely match the look and strength of real teeth, which makes them a great option for tooth restoration. Because of how well they are able to mimic the aesthetic of real teeth they can be used to restore both posterior and anterior teeth.
Porcelain is one of the most impressive materials we have available when it comes to matching the look of real teeth. Because of the way it resists staining and its opacity, it is able to pass very easily as a real tooth. All porcelain restorations are typically only used to restore anterior (front) teeth because it cannot withstand the immense pressures that the molars experience.
Gold:Of all the materials that we use to restore your teeth, gold is the most similar in feel and strength to natural teeth. Many people enjoy the beautiful craftsmanship that goes into making gold crowns.
Porcelain Fused to Metal: A metal base that is coated in porcelain in order to match the aesthetic of a real tooth. This option allows us to offer patients crowns for a molar that display all the great aesthetic attributes of porcelain.
The Dental Crown Procedure
Dental crowns require two trips to our office to complete. During the first trip, we will shape your tooth to accept the crown by removing some of the enamel. Next, we will take an impression of your tooth that will be sent to our dental lab where they will craft a perfect replica of your tooth out of the material of your choice.
During the second visit we will place the crown and make sure that it fits into your bite properly.
