Sleep Apnea Richmond, VA

Image of sleepless woman needing Sleep Apnea treatment in Richmond, VAMany of our patients have heard of sleep apnea because it is a common disorder among adults. What many patients do not know, is that Fred Knaysi DDS, PC can help identify, diagnose, and provide treatment options for patients who suffer from sleep apnea.

What is Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a disorder characterized by repeated pausing or reduction of airflow during sleep. If a pause lasts for ten seconds or more, it is an apnea. It can be difficult to pinpoint the precise cause of sleep apnea, but common symptoms can be telling indicators of the disorder.

At Fred Knaysi DDS, PC, we specialize in the treatment of obstructive apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by a collapse or interference with your airway. Untreated sleep apnea can prevent you from getting deep enough, healthy sleep. This leads to numerous problems that can severely affect your long-term health.

Causes and Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

The most common cause of obstructive sleep apnea is excess weight or obesity. This can lead to an increase in the soft tissue around the mouth and throat. When your muscles relax during sleep, this tissue can block the airway. After your body’s unsuccessful attempt to take a breath, the oxygen in your blood will drop, and your brain will signal your body to wake up.

You do not need to be overweight to suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. Hereditary issues, such as a deviated septum, narrow airway, or unusually large tongue, can also lead to sleep apnea. Certain medications or allergies can be contributing factors as well. In children, sleep apnea can be caused by enlarged adenoids, tonsils, or an extreme overbite.

There are several symptoms of sleep apnea to look out for. If you suffer from daytime fatigue or sleepiness, insomnia, poor concentration, headaches, or memory problems, you could have sleep apnea. Mood complications such as irritability, anxiety, or depression can also be indicators. The most common symptom is usually reported by a sleeping partner and includes loud snoring or choking sounds (followed by silence and a gasp for air).

Long-term complications can arise if sleep apnea is not properly diagnosed and treated. You could suffer from high blood pressure, heart disease, heart attack, heart failure, or pulmonary hypertension. Severe cases can even lead to death, so it is important to take action now and find a solution.

Solutions to Sleep Apnea

For light sleep apnea, we offer a variety of home treatment techniques to restore your sleep. We suggest elevating your head using an extra pillow or wedge. You may want to avoid sleeping on your back to prevent your tongue from blocking your airway. You can try to open your nasal passage with breathing strips, a nasal dilator, or nasal flush. If your sleep apnea is caused by weight gain, exercise and dieting is usually the best form of treatment.
If you suffer from moderate to severe sleep apnea, we may recommend you talk to a trained specialist. Some patients find relief with the use of a Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure (CPAP) machine or supplemental oxygen. Our office also has custom-made oral appliances to help keep your airway open.
