Dental Implants Richmond, VA
When tooth loss becomes a problem that you have to deal with, chances are it won’t take too long before you are tired of it. It can be hard to chew some of your favorite foods, sometimes it’s even painful when things poke your gums in a spot where you have lost a tooth. Your speech and the way you enunciate can change dramatically, depending on which teeth are missing. Lots of people who are missing teeth even report that they don’t smile too much anymore because they become self-aware of their missing teeth. When you have had enough of the troubles that come with tooth loss, we have the solution for you – dental implants.
Dental implants are a phenomenal tooth replacement option that allows you to regain the ability to eat and speak as you would with your real teeth. People who have implants placed often feel as though they have their real teeth back because they do such a great job of replacing both the form and function of a real tooth. So what is it that makes dental implants so valuable?
The Concept that Makes Dental Implants Great
Dental implants are the only tooth replacement option that are surgically placed into the bone in your jaw. Because they are made of titanium, a metal that is known to be biocompatible, they will eventually be accepted by the bone structure in your jaw through a process known as osseointegration.
When something is said to be “biocompatible” that means that the human body readily accepts it. Osseointegration is the process of the bone growing around the implant and integrating it into your bone structure. When the bone in your jaw accepts a dental implant it is encouraged to grow, which in-turn prevents bone loss and promotes continued oral health.
Dental implants can support single tooth restorations as well as bridges and even full arch restorations. That’s right, you can have all of the teeth in your mouth permanently replaced with the help of dental implants!
A dental implant will take at least two visits to our office to be completed. During the first visit we will take some measurements and an impression of your mouth in order to send to our dental lab. The dental lab will use this data and the impressions to sculpt a perfect replica of your tooth that will cap your implant.
Each implant is made up of three parts – post, abutment, and crown. Once we are finished taking the impressions we can begin the process of placing the post into the bone in your jaw. We will make a small incision in your gums in order to access the bone below. We will then surgically place the post into the jaw, and suture the gums closed. The healing process can take several months.
Once the healing process is finished, we will have your restoration back from the lab. We will place the abutment into the post and the crown will be permanently affixed to the abutment.
It is important to note that there is a high rate of failure of dental implants among those who smoke. Smoking should be avoided at all costs as it is a serious threat to the health of your dental implants.
